This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
